Football Myth Busted: More Training Always Makes You Better

Thursday | IBS Academy

There is a common belief among young footballers that the more hours they spend training, the better they will become.

But football development is not simply about spending more time on the pitch.

A player can train for hours every day and still struggle to improve if the training lacks purpose, the player does not recover properly, or the same mistakes are repeated without correction.

THE MYTH

“The more you train, the better you become.”

THE REALITY

Quality matters just as much as quantity.

Effective football training should have a clear purpose. A player should know what they are trying to improve during each session.

For one player, it may be first touch. For another, passing under pressure, finishing, speed, positioning or decision-making.

Training without focus can easily become repetition without real development.

WHY RECOVERY MATTERS

Training places stress on the body. Recovery gives the body time to adapt and prepare for the next session.

Young footballers need adequate rest, good nutrition, hydration and sleep to support their development.

A tired player may struggle with concentration, coordination and decision-making, making it harder to get the best out of training.

TRAIN SMARTER, NOT JUST HARDER

A developing footballer should focus on:

1. Quality Training
Work on specific areas that need improvement.

2. Consistency
Improvement comes from regular practice over time.

3. Recovery
Rest is part of the development process, not a waste of time.

4. Learning
Understand why you are doing an exercise instead of simply completing it.

5. Decision-Making
Football is not only about technical ability. Players must learn to make the right decisions under pressure.

WHAT YOUNG FOOTBALLERS SHOULD REMEMBER

You don't have to be the player who trains the longest.

Aim to be the player who comes to training with a purpose, works seriously, listens to the coach, learns from mistakes and returns ready to improve again.

More hours do not automatically mean more progress.

Smart training + consistency + recovery + discipline = better development.

IBS ACADEMY TAKEAWAY

Football development is a journey.

Don't focus only on how much you train. Focus on what you are learning, what you are improving and how consistently you are applying it.

The best training session is not necessarily the longest one.

It is the one that helps you become a better footballer.
